Swimming Nostalgia

15 Jan

With only a few days left until the Miami Marathon I am getting a very familiar feeling; the “getting-ready-to-race feeling”. During taper week, when I was still swimming, my stomach would tingle when envisioning myself competing. It brings a big smile on my face to think of the good ol’ times. Here are some of my great swimming moments:

  • In 2002 I qualified for my first big international competition; the 2002 Junior European Championships in Linz:

  • In 2003 I was able to qualify again for the Junior European Championships, this time in Glasgow:
  • Got nominated for “two Basler Sport-Champions des Jahres” (2004/2005).

  • 2005: Choice to continue swimming career in the U.S. led to the making of the following video:
  • In 2006 I successfully competed at the NCAA Division II National Championships.
  • 2007 was one of the more successful years in my career – I competed for the Swiss National Team at the University Games in Bangkok:

Mountain West Conference Championship 2008

Mountain West Conference

USA

I know, I haven’t updated my blog in a while – I was busy, ok?! Stop whining! I just came back from this years Mountain West Conference Championship Meet in Oklahoma City (By the way. Why is North Texas so windy? ‘Cause Oklahoma sucks!). The Utes traveled all the way down there to compete against other schools of the MWC. Even though we finished last on the men’s side, we can be happy with what we achieved this year. We broke a couple of school records and kicked some “old fools” off the Top 10 lists.

I did my part. I got third with the 800y free relay (6:36.42), my split was a phenomenal 1:37.24. My 500y free was not as stellar, i finished sixth with a 4:29.44. – It was still a best time. The 200y free (1:38.52) went a little better, I finished fifth. On the last day I swam the mile, which took me 15:43.61 to finish (sixth), and the 400y free relay, where I split (44.98).

It’s official we are going to Bangkok! [en/de]

22 Jun

USA Dear Friends, today the Swiss Swimming Federation publicly announced the people that qualified for the University Games in Bangkok. Michel De Carolis and Marco Ferraro (that’s me) will represent Switzerland and therefore join Damian Brown, the third Ute, that will be diving for New Zealand at the Games.

“Guess who’s back, back again.” – Slim Shady

USA I apologize for my scarce posting ethic. Various reasons are resposible for that:

  • University Games. I am currently trying to qualify for the University Games in Bangkok.
  • Rachel. My girlfriend transferred up here and I want to spend as much time as possible with her.
  • Summer school. I am taking summer classes that require more attention than I thought they would.
  • Work. I am also working at the information desk of the Heritage Center at the University.
  • Swimming. Next to all those things I am working out twice daily.

  • Arbeit. Zusaetzlich arbeite ich am Info Stand des Uni Campus.
  • Schwimmen. Neben all den erwaehnten Dingen trainiere ich zweimal taeglich.

U.S. Spring National Championship 2007 [en/de]

US Spring Nationals

USA

This year’s U.S. Nationals took place near the “city that never sleeps” – New York City. A small staff including 2 coaches (Ron Lockwood and Mike Litzinger) and 2 swiss swimmers (Michel De Carolis and Marco Ferraro) set forth to invade the Nassau County Pool and make a significant impact. Ultimately only Michel (AKA ‘swiss’ and ‘mikey’) was able to show his full potential to the decent field of talented, young swimmers. He broke a six year long streak of stagnation and qualified for the University Games in his main stroke, – the 200 breastroke.
Marco (that’s me) unfortunately failed to repeat what his teammate achieved. Even though he recorded a life time best in his 200 m freestyle he was still too much over the required cut time for the University Team of Switzerland. There is still hope, he has another chance to qualify at the Irvine Novaquatics Speedo Grand Challenge, that will take place this at the end of May in Southern California.

Schweiz
